The place to visit!
The Bateleur Main Camp is really good! This is a place that I can really recommend for people visiting Kruger Park. The staff (Leighton, Temba & Surprise) were superb. Their skills, personality and service attitude made this trip one to remember. A special thanks needs to be given to Surprise for his cooking skills. I have been in a lot of top class restaurants and in my opinion Surprise could work in any of them. As an additional bonus my family was the only customer group in Bateleur. This privacy made the event even better.
WONDERFUL OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Very satisfied with the overall experience, staff was very courteous and professional, the services including the meals were all very good, and the Safari excursions were the best.. very knowledgeable and friendly guides. My family was very satisfied with the experience.
We stayed at Bateleur in October and we were very disappointed with the experience compared to the expectations that we had based on their website.
• The cook at the camp prepared some excellent meals.
• Decent game drives with some very good sightings.
• The facilities were definitely not “upmarket” as their site claims.
• Our tent flooded during a rainstorm. To make matters worse, the staff did not really seem to care that this had happened.
• The tipping recommendations we received were way too high when compared to recommendations we received at the other camps and lodges we stayed at.
• We received none of the “included activities” of bushcraft, spider & scorpion module, and basic astronomy.
• Construction was ongoing just outside our tent, so we had no privacy.
Hopefully when the current construction projects are completed this camp will offer a better experience.
Extraordinary location immersed in nature. the management is very friendly and as a family relay. very nice safaris and especially exciting the one on foot. We are enjoyed a good experience. highly recommended.
New on the market
Very small lodge, only one or two cars depending on the number of guests. Lots of efforts to cook special very nice-looking and tasty gluten-free food, thanks to the cook! A bit remote from other safari playing fields, quiet but with somewhat less rich wildlife? (less cars so less information about anything interesting too see) Definitely a different experience from other lodges in the Kruger national park
A real safari experience from another age (with nice details)
I stayed five nights in the main camp. This is a human-sized camp (much more intimate than all the lodges around in RSA private reserves). the team is small but everybody is nice and friendly, always listening to guests and trying to be helpful.
Tip for photographers: Plenty of birds in the garden, but the density of leaves makes then difficult to catch on a memory card. You may want to concentrate on Griffon Goya, the (nice surprise) of a house cat!
The camp is wide open to wildlife (except elephants who are kept out by electric wire), so many opportunities to shoot a picture at antelopes or even baboons (they can be noisy at night).
Access to the camp through the road is a bit uncertain. If you feel that you should be arrived, but don’t see the camp; Just drive on. It’s farther down. 🙂 Brad knows it, but I don’t know how this can be improved a little.
Nice touch: the 230V Euro power converter made life easier for us from France.
Brad (the boss, by the way) was a great guide. Always listening to the guests. Permanently communicating with Lucky, our tracker, which makes the safaris even more interesting somewhat. They don’t hesitate to share tips about how they are tracking the animals, what they see, what they don’t, what they believe or hope and how they decide to move in one direction or another.
I was guided only one day by Sophia (the boss, too). And she has even a keener sense of tracking (and good eyes). Recommended, if you can get her to drive you!
The huge expanse of reserve (5000+ ha in exclusivity and 2000ha shared) limits the risk of bumping into many other cars (a real safari experience of another age). no traffic jams, not much of radio talk, all is based on the exceptional qualities of Brad and Lucky.
Everybody here seems to be very enthusiastic. So, if you go along with this, there could even be some flexibility on safari times. And Brad being a photographer of quality helps significantly, because he places the car taking light into consideration from the beginning.
Tip: Brad is also passionate about birding and bush walking.
In short? I can’t wait to come back there.
I’ve been to quite a number of lodges and camps in the last 7 years. This is clearly the best, the less “touristy”, a lot more “zen” and calm, a lot more oriented toward wildlife observation (and you will find every animal you may want to see).
Best experience ever!
Wow, this trip was perfect! The people of Bateleur were so nice and great! It was very cosy and personal. Love the ambiance, loved the food, loved the animals, loved everything!! Best experience I’ve ever had! I could recommend Bateleur to everybody!!
AMAZING, best vacation!!!
By far the best customer appreciation, customer relationships, and all around service I have ever experienced. I am amazed with the quality of the food, service, and employees. Will absolutely go back again. Didn’t want to leave. The staff was so friendly, always concerned with the guests but also the safety and experience of the animals on the safari.
From the moment we set foot on the property, we were treated with friendly professionalism. The cold beer while we completed our indemnity forms and the quick transfer of luggage from vehicle to tent spelled one thing “competence”. Sophia, the best host and guide we could have asked for. Lucky did not give up on finding the elusive leopard, kept it hidden until the last morning!!! 😉 . Comfort’s food was really comforting, although we would have survived on half!!!! The highlight was tracking lion and buffalo on foot!!!! Identifying unknown bird species in our home garden, was another stunner!! Thanks guys, we’ll be back!!!!
Fantastic Bush Safari experience for those wanting the ‘real’ thing!
A real bush experience – back to nature at its best. This is what real safari is all about – basic tents, campfires, bucket showers, excellent food and company, fantastic guides and trackers – what more do you need??? The walking safaris were amazing with phenomenal tracking, game drives gets you to see just about everything – but this camp is all about the smaller things too, not just the Big 5. Even a lesson in bushcraft. For the kids this trip was a huge learning experience about Mother Nature and enormous fun too. The highlights were the constant hyena companions in camp, the elephant in camp during one night and day, Wild Dog pack sighting, and tracking leopard on foot whilst sighting both ele and buff! For my 6yr old daughter the highlight was the bucket shower with a cup whilst ele munched around us…:-) What a wonderful way to celebrate my Dad’s 80th birthday with all the family (16 of us ranging from 3 – 80 yrs old) at a private bush safari – thank you Sophia, Brad and the Bateleur team for a truly memorable and fantastic experience!
