Best of the best.
Bateleur has the #1 trackers in all Africa. This is not an exaggeration. You are able to learn about the African bush with hands-on experience and tracking. You cannot find these kinds of activities elsewhere.
Mobile camp – you won’t be disappointed
I have recently returned from 5 days at the mobile camp (note this is different from main camp). This is my second visit and once again had a fantastic visit. I would highly recommend this and think it is a much better option than the very expensive lodges. You sleep in the bush with no fences around you in comfortable tents. Accommodation is basic but all you need. Open air showers, pit toilets and chairs around the fire is about all you get but you don’t need anymore. The food was fantastic, cooked by Surprise and Lucky, who also kept the camp shipshape.. You have a landrover and 2 guides/rangers at your disposal. Doc as a spotter/tracker is unsurpassed in his abilities. We had Sean as our ranger (highly recommended – see naturalexposuresafaris.com for details). We saw all the ‘big 5’ and lots of smaller game/birds/spiders etc. You will experience game drives and walks and also get to stalk game and learn about their tracks. I have been to many game reserves and experienced different types of game viewing. In my opinion, this is the best option to get up close to African game.
Total captivation and happiness
Let me start by saying thankyou to the Team at Bateleur, what an amazing experience.
We travelled to the park with a small group of eight people staying at the Bateleur Main Camp.
From the first minute of arrival we were captivated by the heard of Elephants crossing the road, the Giraffes eating in the distance and the curious Kudu saying hello during lunch.
The Camp was extremely comfortable with all amenities, with a communal dinning and entertainment area. The living areas were private and had all facilities with every trip back to the rooms being an adventure (especially at night).
Overall I cannot recommend this camp any to a greater extent, a fantastic team, a fantastic experience and a fantastic place.
Most Amazing holiday in this Life
We travelled to the Bateleur Main Camp with a small group of 8 it was the most Amazing holiday to treasure, getting up close to all of nature and its wonderful animals that South Africa has to offer we saw the big 5 on our first drive into the Camp. Our guide and his staff were fantastic and the beds were the most comfortable beds we have found when travelling and we travel regularly to 5 star hotels. Every moment was moment to treasure, from Tracking the Rhinos and Lions by following the foot prints in the sand and learning to think like them to getting close to the Elephants, Leopards Giraffes, Impala, Water Buffalo and more. At the Camp we had a family of baboons and monkeys in the trees and around the Camp along with other visitors and beautiful candle lit dinners around the fire at night and much, much more. Our eyes were opened up to how nature works and minute details that we would easily miss. Even learning about the termite mounds was such a insightful experience to remember. There are no words to describe this experience in its full and it also was very apparent that nothing is wasted in Nature if only Humans learned a thing or too from our natural surroundings we would all make the world a better place.
MOBILE CAMP was fantastic!!
First of all, let me be clear … I am in no way, shape or form an “outdoorsy” person, so the idea of camping in the middle of the bush in South Africa took a little persuading by my best friend. When we first arrived at camp I was still skeptical about how this was all going to work, but it does work and it works wonderfully!!!
Doctor, Sam and Special (sp??) were so good to us. They were constantly making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The way that they had things set up for us was perfect. We went out on game drives in the morning and in the evening with the middle of the day off. We also trekked rhinos and lions on foot which was so cool! Doctor is knowledgeable about everything, he would point out the smallest disturbance to us and he knew exactly what had passed through and where it was going, it was truly fascinating to meet someone that in tune with nature.
My biggest fear going into this experience was obviously sleeping in the middle of the bush, but there is something so peaceful about it. All you can hear is the world moving around you, there were never any animals walking through camp at night (except one sassy hyena that ran right through the middle of camp when we were all still awake) and we were always safe. One thing that you have to see is the night sky when you are sitting around the fire (aka the “bush TV”) and you look up and see more stars then you have ever seen in your entire life!
So take it from me, the least “outdoorsy” person in the world. The Bateleur Mobile Camp is worth the trip. You can so easily stay in a lodge or a stationary tented camp, both of which I have done, but this is an experience like none other and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a TRUE safari exeperience!
Early December 2 night stay!
Thank you for a very memorable stay at Bateleur Main Camp. My Wife and I, Rosalind & Trevor Corie stayed at Bateleur for 2 nights. The rooms, amenities and food were just world class. A truly unforgettable & memorable experience. Our Guide “Doc” was another main attraction. This man has knowledge beyond comprehension. His elaboration and attention to detail is quite mind-boggling to say the least. His wealth of expertise and knowledge on animals, their environment, the fauna, flora and bird-life is actually quite astonishing. It was a joy to listen to him – a real education. We could never have expected such an awesome 2 days at Bateleur. We cannot thank Doc and his team of professionals enough for an awesome stay. We look forward to another time, another stay and another wonderful memory.
Great wrap up to a visit to Krueger NP
The highlight of this two-week holiday was a three-night reservation in a tent camp nestled deep in an unfenced private reserve right next to the park. By day, Surprise, Lucky, and Doc cared for the camp, while at night we were left in the company of Elephants, Buffalo, Hyenas, and giant Porcupines cutting through the grounds. Our natural alarm clocks were screaming, screechy flocks of Francolin dashing past our tents at dawn announcing a bounteous breakfast served by our smiling staff. The non-enclosed outhouses exposed us to nature (and nature to us!), while buckets of heated water operated our simple three-sided showers.
Although the reserve offered remarkable reviews of Kruger’s incredible characters, with familiar sunrise scenes of full-stomached Hyenas heading home as voracious Vultures circled for the left-overs, our fully-open Landrover allowed us amazing, awesome encounters with the smaller specialties of this South African sector. For example, we were able to observe the many, mini, milling Mongoose families messing around the termite mounds, a large laboratory of Lizards, including Plated and Striped, monstrous Monitors, scuttling Skinks, exquisite Agamas, and engaging Geckos, as well as two of Africa’s most poisonous snakes, Boomslang and Puff Adder. More structured spot-lighting at night uncovered big-eyed Bush Babies and creeping Chameleons.
The final plus of this preserve was our ability to jump from the jeep at any time and at any place to examine the infinite unfamiliar insectivorous inhabitants of this environment. Always armed with a rifle, our guide, digging in the clay and overturning rocks, showed us Antlions, Dung Beetles, Giant Land Snails, Scorpions, and Spiders of all kinds, including the bulky Baboon Spider (Tarantula) with black primate-like pads on its feet. Doc and our guide were also professional trackers of Poachers, presently training the Kruger staff how to follow the foot prints of these criminal killers. We spent much time down and dirty in the dust digesting the secrets that each animal track disclosed.
The Best of the Best If You Want Real Bush Safari Experience
My wife and I spent 3 days with Guide Doctor and Tracker Eliias before moving on to a luxury resort. Bataleur is a “no brainer” if you want luxury “camping” (i.e. beautiful tented room) and the best guide in Africa. The guides at the top tier resort where we are currently staying do not compare to Doctor and Elias. You must go. I guarantee a life changing experience.
Magical & Educational
My Husband & I had the opportunity to visit Bateleur Eco Safari Camp in 2010 and we are still telling everyone about it today. The site itself was exactly what we had envisaged and so met all of our Safari expectations. The team that looked after us were incredible. The experience was incredible. We managed to see some great game, experienced survival techniques and just thoroughly enjoyed our time. Highly recommend this Camp…and we want to go back.
A real African experience
I was privileged to spend two nights at Bateleur’s Mobile Camp in May 2015 – The camp is not fenced and is moved frequently to avoid leaving a footprint, This is an opportunity to experience Africa in close-up. Game viewing was awesome, the Big 5 within 24 hours.
The knowledge base, which the friendly staff shared with us was mind boggling, back in camp between game activities we were taught basic bush craft; How to light a fire without matches, to make a rope and hollow out a fruit to make a container
The people working there are very nice, and helpful. The accommodation was basic (dome tents), but comfortable, Food was simple, but tasty and well presented, bear in mind that there is no kitchen here, all in keeping with the bush experience.
I would recommend the Mobile camp to those who seek a real Africa experience.
