Adventure in the African Bush – Bateleur Mobile Camp
I was privileged to spend two nights at Bateleur’s Mobile Camp recently – The camp is not fenced and is moved frequently to avoid leaving a footprint, This is an opportunity to experience Africa in closeup. I felt like I spent my entire visit “in the bush”.
Days were spent walking or driving in the wild, accompanied by a very knowledgeable armed Ranger and sharp eyed tracker – we saw the “Big 5” within the first 24 hours!
The knowledge base, which the friendly staff shared with us was mind boggling, back in camp between game activities we were taught basic bushcraft; How to light a fire without matches, to make a rope and hollow out a fruit to make a container. At night around the fire we were taught basic astronomy – how to navigate by the stars!
The accommodation was basic (dome tents), but comfortable, Food was simple, but tasty and well presented, all in keeping with the bush experience.
On our last morning we tracked dangerous game on foot, Our Ranger gave us a very clear briefing – what ever you do don’t run! stand still, and do what I tell you,- whilst the adrenaline was definitely pumping, at no time did I feel frightened due to the reassuring presence of our armed Ranger and Tracker.
I would recommend the Mobile camp to those who seek a real Africa experience.
The best safari experience ever.
I spent 4 incredible nights at Bateleur Main Camp and classify this as the best ever wildlife experience. Accommodation facilities were first class – ‘understated excellence’ in an exciting and pristine wildlife environment, with minimal footprint and blending so well with the surrounding bush. Game viewing was amazing, the Big 5 and more on the very first day; guides and trackers are very professional and informative. Food was abundant, well prepared and presented, camp staff always smiling and helpful. Bataleur has substantial but subtle differences from other safari experiences; no glitz and glamour here, just a quality of offering that sets it apart. A special feeling of being the only people in this vast wildlife kingdom will definitely lure us back.
5 fantastic days at the Bateleur mobile camp
We spent a fantastic 5 days at the Bateleur mobile camp. As a South African nature lover, this trip beats all other bush breaks. Tracking wild animals in the bush and coming within metres of rhino and elephant on foot, firearm training and martial arts under the jacaranda trees! Amazing food, highly skilled tracking teams and expert wildlife knowledge. Definitely a must do trip for serious nature lovers. There’s honestly no other experience like this.
Excellent stay at the mobile camp
In October 2014 I stayed three days at the mobile camp with a group of people. The camp is open, meaning there is no fence around, and we slept in tents. Yes, two person tents:)
The shower is a manual one, not far from the tents, where you have to blend hot an cold water in a bucket before you go down. The view is towards a river bed. During my first shower I had monkeys looking at me (maybe mine was bigger then theirs?) from the opposite side of the river bed. How often do you experience something like that?
In this camp you feel really alive and out in the wild. During night animals can walk straight through, and we are talking about leopards and hyenas. The people working there are very nice, and helpful. They make very good food, but bear in mind that there is no kitchen here. This is a simple mobile camp, and you have to make sure your tent is clean yourself.
I can absolutely recommend this camp for a few days. It will make your stay in SA more exciting!
In Nov, 2013, had the chance to stay at the mobile camp for a tracking course and had the most amazing time! Incredible animal experiences (hyenas around the camp every night, learning that scorpions glow under blue light, rhino and elephant sightings regularly) combined with incredibly knowledgeable staff brought everything together for an amazing experience.
Best Family Bush Trip Ever
Our family visit to Bateleur Eco Safari Main Camp has been our most exciting educational, and magical bush experience ever.
There were numerous highlights for us. The experience of tracking and finding rhino was extremely exciting and highly educational. It was like learning a new language and what added to the experience was the tracker giving us each an opportunity to track for a bit including my 7 year old daughter. It was phenomenal to stand there in the bush watching these amazing creatures. Not once did we feel we were in any danger as the whole process was done extremely professionally and properly.
Being on foot in the bush has a totally different feel about it and is a completely different experience to being in a vehicle. We saw so much more of what’s going on around us and it took our love of the bush to another level.
My girls aged 7 and 10 delighted in the riverbed activities where they learnt to make a fire without matches, rope from scratch and set snares. They also loved finding clay and making pottery in the riverbed while a herd of elephants played their own games in the sand further up the river.
The food was outstanding and we looked forward to every meal. We were amazed at the delicious food that was made on the fire! Sitting around the fire at night chatting about the bush and the stars also added to the whole bush experience
The accommodation at the main camp was superb, spacious and everything was beautifully laid out, well thought out and of superb quality.
The guides were all very professional and their bush knowledge excellent. They took the time to explain things clearly and were excellent with the kids.
I highly recommend a visit at least once in your life to Bateleur Main Camp. You’ll love it and you’ll go back!
I stayed at the mobile camp with a university group. We had a wonderful experience. The service was excellent and the guides were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Camp staff try to have as little impact on the surrounding environment as possible and you can tell when the warthogs start moving back in as camp is moving out. The food was excellent and the tents were very comfortable.
Real African experience
I completed a tracking course on the mobile camp with friends and acquaintances from the nature and hunting fraternity in South Africa, and would highly recommend it, both for locals but perhaps even more for foreigners looking for a real and untainted bush experience. The guides are well equipped and possibly overqualified, and we all left thoroughly enriched – I intend joining a second camp with my kids when they are slightly older, great experience! Lots of hiking and bush! Also worth mentioning they offer professional man/poacher tracking courses thanks to the endemic Rhino poaching in SA, the guys teaching it give courses to the SA National Parks staff.
Eco-Adventure at its best
My experience at Bateleur mobile camp was one that will be ingrained in my mind for a lifetime. Each day was a roller coaster ride filled with high adrenalin rushes and calm intermittent moments in-between, which were spent learning about plants, spiders and bugs up to the most amazing facts about your largest mammals. We had everything from buffalo and hyena coming through our camp at night, to approaching lions on foot 2 out of the 4 days. Other amazing encounters where had approaching Rhino on foot, coming across a pack of about 30 Wild dogs playing with a kill and seeing a family of Hyena with pups coming out of there den on an early morning drive.
The team at Bateleur, whether firearm instructing, teaching you to track or simply setting up a comfortable camp with good home cooked food where all world class in there various tasks.
If you looking for a true eco-adventure with some of Africa’s most learned guides this is place to go. Thanks to the whole team at Bateleur! I’ve already booked 3 more trips there this year and have no doubt I will do the same in the years to come.
Best of Timbavati
My husband and I stayed at Bateleur Main Camp with 2 friends who live in Canada. The accommodation was very comfortable and spacious and has an overall feeling of high quality unpretentious comfort. The lodge has an incredible location and a wonderful ambience and you feel as though you are right in the middle of the animals’ domain with all the comforts that you could ask for. The food was amazing and the staff were very approachable and highly professional. They never hesitated to go the extra mile as witnessed by our head guide’s amazing and successful efforts to locate the big male lion that had been spotted on an earlier game drive – that was the only member of the Big 5 that we had not seen up to that point. The game viewing was spectacular and the included extra bushcraft activities far exceeded our expectations! The highlight was dinner by candlelight in the dry river bed directly in front of camp, enhanced by the appearance of a large female leopard who sauntered past not 15 metres from us with not so much as a glance in our direction. This is beautiful Africa at its very best and by far the best experience of the Timbavati or the Greater Kruger that I have ever had! Our Canadian friends were completely blown away
